Wahkohtowin Strengthening Families Program:  

Wahkohtowin is a strength-based skill-building program that works with youth ages 11-17 along with their families/ support circles to increase communication, decrease conflict, connect with culture, and increase bonding. 


Wahkohtowin at SNA runs every Thursday evening from 5-8 PM for 14 weeks. 


The program provides wrap-around support to families through mentorship, family home visits, youth outings, advocacy and referrals to additional supports outside of regularly scheduled programming. 

Childminding, dinners, and transportation are provided for participating families free of cost. 

Session 9: 5-8PM on Thursdays from May 2, 2019 to July 25, 2019 with a graduation ceremony on July 27, 2019.

 Wahkohtowin is a Cree word and is pronounced Wah-KOH-toh-win. It means kinship, or the state of being connected. 

Wahkohtowin Strengthening Families Program is 14 week skills development program, for youth aged 11-17 and their families to attend together. There is no cost to attend this fun, voluntary, and culturally safe program. Each week, families attend program at the location of their choice for a 3 hour workshop. A meal (all dietary restrictions including halal are observed), childminding, and assistance with transportation are provided. Cultural events, interpretation services, and in-home mentorship are also offered. 

This program may be a great option for your family if you are:

  • Part of a family with at least 1 youth between the ages of 11 - 17

  • Able to come to program for 3 hours each week, for 14 weeks

  • Experiencing high levels of conflict within the family or community

  • Willing to complete a pre- and post-program survey



Wahkohtowin SFP is offered at 4 locations in Winnipeg:

  1. Ka Ni Kanichihk | 455 McDermot Ave | Tuesdays from 5-8PM.

  2. Masjid Bilal - Winnipeg Islamic Centre (Bilal Centre) | 33 Warnock St | Wednesdays from 5-8PM. Language interpreters available

  3. Spence Neighbourhood Association (SNA) | 365 McGee St | Thursdays from 5-8PM. 

  4. Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad (Ndinawe) | 462 Selkirk Ave | - Mondays from 5-8PM.

Families are encouraged to select the site most comfortable and convenient for them. Program sessions begin each Spring, Summer and Winter.
