Holistic Housing

Housing at SNA uses the housing first model and approaches the housing challenges with a holistic lens.  Individuals are assisted in finding housing, keeping it, maintaining it, and becoming a part of the community.  The task often entails working with or in the following areas: EIA advocacy, RTB rules and regulations, home improvement grants, mediation, safety, promoting new housing developments in the neighbourhood, employment programs, volunteer programs, rooming houses, bed bug remediation, health, connecting community to resource... and many others.

Three staff work together to connect individuals to the resource they require for housing.

The Homeless Outreach Mentor assists individuals that are homeless by offering continuous support in finding a place to live until they feel they are ready to do it alone. Connections and networks are made around participants’ needs.

The Rental Safety Coordinator assists community members who are having issues with their landlords - and landlords who are having issues with their tenants.  This mediator position ensures that all parties understand their rights and responsibilities and provides support with the goal of keeping people housed.

The Housing Coordinator provides support to all housing staff and ensures implementations of projects highlighted in the Housing Plan are done.  The coordinator ensures that the connections between stakeholders are made and provides venues for the voices to be heard.

The SNA Holistic Housing Committee is open to anyone that lives, volunteers and works in the Spence neighbourhood.  We believe that everyone is entitled to have a home where they feel safe, secure, comfortable and welcomed. This group works towards ensuring that the housing needs of individuals in the community are met by guiding the implementation of the plans that have been created by the community.  The main areas we currently work on are the quality of housing in the neighbourhood, the quantity of housing, affordability, and accountability.  Meetings are held monthly on the first Tuesday at 6:00pm at 615 Ellice Ave.

The SNA Tenants Committee provides a supportive environment where you have an opportunity to learn about services provided by the Residential Tenancy Branch and various resources to go when you need help. The committee also works to ensure tenants understand their right and responsibilities as renters.

The SNA Tenants Committee gathers every 3rd Tuesday of the Month, except in July and August and on holidays. We meet at 5:30 PM at 615 Ellice Avenue and a light supper is provided.

Home Improvement Assistance: The various financial opportunities to improve properties in the neighbourhood have proven to make a noticeable difference in Spence. As a result, the incentives leveraged additional improvements in housing stock and social investments.
